Basically, so that you get to enjoy being in each others company now that you're married, without anyone else to disturb you.

It depends on what you want to do on your honeymoon. I know people who have gone to help conserve Orang-utans in Brazil, couples who have gone to Thailand to help re-build the disaster area of the 2005 Tsunami. I also know a couple who went trekking round America and couples who have gone to the Caribbean simply to relax.

If you're thinking of romantic, Paris would be a lovely destination to go to.

It's an old, old tradition dating back centuries, the point of which, to be blunt, was to try to get the bride pregnant. Honeymoons used to last an entire lunar cycle (hence "moon"), so the idea was that the bride sometime during that month would be fertile, and so she'd get pregnant.

Kind of an odd thing to think about, though, considering that ovulation wasn't known to exist until the last couple of centuries.
